Mountain

Mountain

Mountains can be both sacred and secular. Myth and stories are passed down to keep a history and culture alive. Adversity through an immigration journey showed me the importance of preserving cultural and family history which I present in a format that parallels the prominent myths of two mountains significant to my journey with archived photographs.

In a bid to identify with one certain culture, I find home in multiple spaces amongst family, friends and in turn, myself.

Process

Many ideas from the start were conceptualised and played a small part in some way or another in the final

I knew I wanted something tangible and nostalgic, reminiscent of being surrounded by family, telling stories while looking through photo albums.

It was important for this project to be grounded and pay homage to the humble roots of a past.

Self-Directed Project

M T + m/i '17

As a further exploration following my final year university project, I created two zines featuring outstanding culturally contrasting visual elements.

Following on from my undergraduate project, the study I had conducted around mountains and their meanings encouraged me to explore a mountain in New Zealand.

To celebrate entering into a new year, I suggested hiking the Tongariro crossing with my family. Sharing this experience with my family meant embracing another part of our found home away from home, finding connections outside our culture and simply enjoying time together.

m/i ‘17 is a zine of instinctively eye-catching scenes collated retrospectively to form a storyline of events that summarised a trip back to my hometown and various towns in India. A strong focus of colours, shapes and composition present the ideas of how I’ve developed a sense of awareness of the cultural surroundings I am immersed in.

Process

Created for A4/A3 posters and social media promotion of Hans. performance at the Basement theatre in Auckland as part of the 2018 Fringe Festival. I aimed to capture the organic, genuine and feel-good vibe of both Hans. and opening act, Imugi with still life plant drawings, lose brush pen strokes and first of the roll film images.

Personal Project

The nostalgia and tangibility of film makes me think of the future while utilising a medium of the past. One of my favourite past times is looking through old family photo albums which has inspired me to shoot with film.

Shooting film allows me to slow down and appreciate the process of enjoying a moment and really think about what it is about this moment that makes me want to capture it.

Highlights

Black + White

By developing my own black and white film, I am able to experiment with levels of contrast. Being able to complete this process is rewarding and something I thoroughly enjoy whilst accepting the fact that it may not turn out perfect.

A service that provides Chinese recipes along with the main component of sauces available for purchase.

Wèi has simple and easily accessible Chinese recipes and sauces for anyone who is unfamiliar with Chinese cuisine and is keen on trying something new.

Process

This project took multiple iterations because the purpose and direction from the start was unclear. These iterations were essential as I found purpose and meaning through them to build on for the final outcome.
